It took 15 years of professional boxing experience to knock him out in the Golden Gloves tournament at Navy Park Gym Thursday night. The left hook to the body that dropped Phillips was delivered, however, by poised 17-year-old Bob Bertelli, a 6-5, 215-pound senior at Maple Heights High School: Although Bertelli has been boxing only since last September, he has been training the last month with veteran heavyweights Harold Carter and Ron Stander, who total 15 years pro ring experience.

"I took one look at that other guy and told Bob to go for the body," said Stander, who should know about body shots. He absorbed about 100 of them in less than five rounds from Frazier, not to mention a few dozen belts to the head, as well. "He did everything I told him. A lot of amateur kids don't train their bodies like they should," continued Stander. "To tell you the truth, I was skeptical.

I couldn't tell how much he was improving in the gym. The work showed tonight." Bertelli's work was accomplished in 53 seconds of the first round, the second-fastest knockout of the night. The only thing faster was novice middleweight James Mackin's 51- second knockout of William Rich. Once again, it was a body shot that felled Rich. "Kill the body and the head will die," remarked veteran trainer Chuck Watkins.

Only four of 16 bouts went the distance, including the fight of the night between novice middleweights Rich Houdek and Richard Conway. Conway, who covered himself with glory despite losing a unanimous verdict, caught a left hook to the chops every time he took a forward step, and he must have walked a mile straight ahead. To the winners go the spoils; however. Bertelli departed Navy Park Gym in the back seat of a long, gray Lincoln Continental owned by his benefactor, Carl Lombardo. The chauffeur was Stander.

Lombardo, who made a million in construction and in his ownership of stock car racetracks, became involved in boxing when he lost threequarters of a million dollars bankrolling the Muhammad Ali-Chuck Wepner fight. He hopes to get even via Bertelli. GOLDEN GLOVES RESULTS OPEN DIVISION 147 Vozar, Estabrook def. Butch Terry, Carter- Watkins, TK0 2. 156 Earl Phelps, PAL 7, def.

The defeat caused the Cavaliers' record to dip to 29-25 and they are three games in arrears of Central Division-leading Washington. The dream of a second straight Barry out, Bucks win MILWAUKEE (AP) Swen Nater hit a 12-foot baseline jump shot at the buzzer Thursday night to give the Milwaukee Bucks a 99-97 National Basketball Association victory over the Golden State Warriors. The Bucks were led by Brian Winters' 22 points and Bob Dandridge's 18.

In three games the former Notre Dame great has played against the Cavaliers he should be allpro. He has averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds against Cleveland. And Thursday night he hit for 28 points and grabbed 11 boards to lead the Braves to a 112-103 victory over the Cavaliers.

"I try not to think about rookie of the year," he said after the game. "I just go out and play hard every night. I make mistakes, but I'm learning more all the time." Dentley had one coach at Notre Dame, Digger Phelps, and enjoyed the stable life, but with Buffalo he already has played under Tates Locke, Bob MacKinnon and now Joe Mullaney. "I'm a strong person," he said, "and going through everything this season is making me a better player. I've been through more things than they (other rookies) Mike Shaw of the Braves staff calls Dantley one of the more disciplined people he has ever known.

"Maybe someone who was less disciplined would have had trouble," said Shaw. Dantley doesn't just do his thing against: Cleveland, either. He is averaging 18.4 ppg this season and is hauling down eight rebounds per. game. He is a proud man.

He wants to be rookie of the year, but he isn't going to let it occupy his mind. Dantley admittingly was miffed that he was drafted sixth last spring.
