Born in 1818, Frederick Douglass became a national leader of the abolitionist movement after escaping slavery. Douglass lived in Rochester for 25 years, longer than he lived anywhere else. He died in 1895 and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery.

This 1964 photo shows the RKO Palace at the corner of North Clinton Avenue and Mortimer Street in Rochester. Everything about the 3,000-seat theater was top-shelf: The enormous crystal chandeliers, the vast mirrored lobby, the elegant women's and men's lounges, the great cerise curtain across the stage. It was torn down in 1965.

June 11, 1949: Rochester began writing a new chapter of its civic history as television made its local debut before a full house audience at the Chamber of Commerce, which was transformed into temporary TV studio when entertainers went on the air. Cameras are focused on quartet of singers, "The Melody Mutilators," while a foursome of women singers, standing at left, awaits its video turn. TV debut was termed "one of the most successful on record.

1966: Shoppers cross makeshift bridges to reach stores on north side of Webster's Main Street which is being widened.

1942: Herbert S. Bodner, an instrument maker at Bausch & Lomb Optical Company, is shown as he works on the new artificial star projector which the U.S. Navy used in its navigational instruction.

The Powers building in 1916 was 50 years old, but still considered a landmark.

Andrews Street bridge stood up under the pounding the Genesee River gave it in the flood of 1865, but its chances of holding its own looked slim when the volume of water shown in this picture was rushing through the city. In 1911, William C. Rudman's farm north of Titus Avenue and east of Cooper Road produced in 1911 47,000 baskets of peaches. 105 pickers harvested the mouth-watering fruit. William's brothers Roy and George also had farms that produced sizable peach crops. William and Mabel Rudman's daughter Gertrude posed for this picture in 1912 when she was 6 years old.

The building, later used by Cluett-Peabody shirt company, was sold to George Eastman and later used as City Hall Annex until 1951.
